Joc has done a great job in both people management and engineering.
For people management, Joc established the job ladder, career management, peer feedback, and performance evaluation processes nearly from scratch. He also built some automated tools to facilitate the adoption of these new processes and kept improving them.
He not only contributed in people management, but he also facilitated the enforcement of engineering best practice, including but not limited to CI/CD automation and service monitoring, and tried to do re-organization so engineers worked more effectively towards these goals. Last but not the least, he refined the agile development process to make sure engineering effort is translated to business outcome, bridging the gap between developers and product side. I appreciated what I have learned from him.
I have learned a lot from observing Joc at work! He has a unique talent for people management, leveraging it to refine and reinforce Pocketmath's team culture. Joc is very operationally-driven and is highly methodical in how he gets things done. Joc is a leader, a manager as well as a mentor.
When he leads, he leads by example. He encourages work-life balance in the office for instance. He volunteers his time to teach us how to play the table tennis and badminton. He would personally joins us for an after-work weekly badminton session.
When he manages, he does not just manage, he talks to his team to understand each problems that arises and he then works, when necessary, with us to resolve each issue. Active discussion are inevitable with Joc around, and that usually remove knots and gets things moving. He also ensures that there are SOPs in place to help increases efficiency and uniformity in performance.
When he teaches, he shares his experiences and guides with his principles and beliefs. He gives team leaders necessary leadership skills and steps in to steer us in the right direction when required.
Joc is sometimes like a friend that shares what he knows, listens to the issues that arises and works together with you to resolve them while learning all of it together.
Joc is an exceptional manager who has the potential to build and grow teams by implementing the correct processes in place.
As a mentor, He is dedicated to helping others achieve their goals and reach their full potential. His passion for mentoring and guiding others is evident, and it's clear that he has a deep understanding of the principles and techniques that are necessary for success. He is a great communicator and listener and has a keen eye for identifying areas for improvement, and he is always willing to offer constructive feedback and advice.
